Report on 'Future of Hospitality: Challenges, Skill Shortages and Solutions'

Report Cover - Future of Hospitality

About the Report: India’s hospitality industry has long been celebrated for its unique ability to embody our nation’s spirit of warmth, diversity, and service. Today, however, it faces pressing challenges that, if left unaddressed, may hinder its growth potential and the prosperity it brings to millions.

This report probes into the talent and skill gap that the industry currently faces, highlighting several key issues, including long working hours, poor work-life balance, and the evolving demands of employment within this field. The hospitality sector has always been labor-intensive and service-oriented, but as we navigate an increasingly competitive global landscape, the need for a skilled and motivated workforce has never been greater. However, the sector is struggling to attract and retain this talent due to the strenuous demands placed on employees, which often include extended hours and limited opportunities for work-life harmony. These factors contribute to high turnover rates and challenges in sustaining a committed workforce, threatening the long-term resilience of the sector.

Addressing these issues is essential not only for the stability of the hospitality industry but also for ensuring that it continues to contribute meaningfully to India’s economy, employment, and global standing. This report provides actionable insights and recommendations for bridging the skill and talent gap through innovative training programs, policies to promote employee well-being, and strategies for creating more sustainable career paths within the industry.

Recommendations from FHRAI CoE HR Summit

Report Cover - FHRAI CoE HR Summit

About the Report: Despite the hospitality industry playing a pivotal role in economic development, employment generation, and cultural exchange, it faces several challenges such as workforce shortage, lack of skilled workforce, skill gap, high attrition, employee retention, and recent low enrollments into hospitality programs. A comprehensive analysis of the current state of hospitality education highlights systemic gaps, including outdated curricula, limited real-world exposure, and inadequate training infrastructure. Additionally, when we look at workforce management, there are issues like long working hours, poor work-life balance, improper employment policies, lack of growth opportunities, as well as unattractive entry-level pay packages. These altogether further aggravate the situation and also deter budding professionals from pursuing careers in hospitality.

To deliberate and understand these challenges and sync hospitality education and workforce policies with industry demands, the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) conducted the HR Summit, engaging stakeholders from academia, industry, and regulatory bodies. The discussions revolved around effective HR management practices and their impact on performance, innovations, and solutions for improving HR management in the industry and finally recommending reforms to improve retention and job satisfaction.

The report presents a host of actionable recommendations for each of the stakeholders.
