SUB: LICENSE FROM COPYRIGHT SOCIETIES NOT REQUIRED FOR MARRIAGE & RELATED FUNCTIONS
Dear Member,
We are happy to inform that the Department for Promotion of Industries & Internal Trade (DPIIT), has now confirmed vide a Public Notice that there is NO requirement of any license for public performance or communication of music during marriage and related functions.

The Public Notice also states that the Department has received several complaints, representations, and grievances from the general public as well as other stakeholders about alleged collection of royalties by the Copyright Societies for performance of musical work, communication to the public of sound recording etc. in marriage functions, in contravention to letter and spirit of Section 52 (1) (za) of Copyright Act, 1957.
Our members may take note of this Public Notice and the directions therein and not insist the guest / consumers to obtain license from respective Copyright Societies when they book venues for marriage and related functions.
It is pertinent to mention that FHRAI has been rigorously pursuing with various Government authorities across all possible forums, highlighting the misconducts of several Copyright Societies that has led to constant harassment to hospitality establishments and unnecessary financial burden to the guests. This directive is a result of FHRAI’s commitment and perseverance to work towards creating a conducive business environment for our members.
