Sub:- Cleaner Fuels Can Help Hotels Re-classify from Red to Orange Category: CPCB

Dear Members,

We wish to inform you of a communication received from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in response to FHRAI’s representation on hotel environmental categorization.

FHRAI had approached the CPCB and the Hon’ble Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, expressing concerns over the current classification of hotels—specifically those rated 3-star and above or having more than 100 rooms—under the Red or Orange categories.

In response, CPCB has clarified that the classification of industrial sectors, including hotels, is based on a scientific methodology using a Pollution Index (PI). The PI accounts for the potential impact of water pollution, air pollution and waste generation.

According to CPCB’s clarification:

  • Hotels rated above 3-star or with 100 or more rooms have a Pollution Index of 81.3, categorizing them under the Red category, currently.
  • However, when such hotels adopt cleaner or gaseous fuels, their Pollution Index reduces to 79.4, thereby allowing reclassification into the Orange category.

This change gives hotels a chance to move to a lower pollution category by using cleaner fuels.

This is for your kind information.

With best regards,

Jaison Chacko
Secretary General
